How Do I Start Value Investing? I am very interested in learning the Ins and Outs of value investing. I understand the underlying concepts but i feel like i am not sure where to start and actually get my hands dirty. In some ways i feel as if i should be studying accounting rather than investing? Can anyone give me some pointers or resources i can check out? Thank you very much.
Universities who teach "value investing" rather than "the efficient market theory"? I will no go into just how frustrated i am that my #1 school teaches the efficient market theory in its finance department, and i was wondering if you know of any universities who go against the grain and teach the principles of value investing instead? my #1 WAS penn state, but after visiting today, i doubt i'll go there now. i also was accepted into Pitt & Indiana-Bloomington.

Best books on investing and value investing?? I've read "the intelligent investor" and "security analysis". Can someone recommend some other great book like these ones? Would you recommend "Common stocks and uncommon profits" by Philip Fisher? Thanks a lot.
What is value investing? I was reading an interesting article on how Warren Buffett invests: http://www.i-endeavors.com/2008/01/18/buffet-baseball-and-patience/ It talks about value investing. What is value investing? Is it a good way to make money in the stock market?
Value investing or Trading? I'm 14 years old and i'm an advocate for corporate Finance. I have read many books such as Value Investing for DUMMIES, The intelligent Investor, Reading Financial reports for DUMMIES, and even some tutorials on Investopedia.com. Finally, my question is are Value investing ways outdated and our we in a makret of pure trading. It seems that everyone is turning to trading and quick capital gains, but I have a love for the ways of Value Investing and I beileive I could be a very successfu Value Investor. Should I take on Trading techniques because it's the popular technique or is there still money to be made in Value Investing?
Question about value investing.? i am reading a book called Value Investing from graham to buffett and beyond. is it a good book? where do i go from here? i want to try hands on things like analyzing FS, but i do not exactly know what im doing is right, for example appraising current assets and so on, evaluating macroeconomic drivers. it all seems so ambiguous. like too many subjectiveness. in day trading, i am completely mechanical. in analyzing stocks for investing, i find there are no strict borders, and the effort may not pay off at least after a year or two, or even longer. one key worry i have is, how do i accurately determine the intrinsic value when thers so much subjectivity to this process. once i have a good measure of intrinsic value, where to go from there? experienced investors must feel some level of confidence about their analysis, i currently do not feel it. thank you.
How do you calculate returns per individual investor and value of fund? If you create a fund through a LLP or S-Corporation, how do you calculate returns per individual investor and value of fund? For example: 5 people each invest $2000 each on January 1st. Each individual investor cannot take out initial investment until 6 months after deposit. September 1st, value of fund = $11,000. Investor A wants to take out total initial investment plus gains. How do you maintain the value of the fund with that loss?
What is your school of thought for investing? Currently, I am reading two books on investing of opposite strategies. On one hand, I am reading Jim Cramer's Real Money book where he believes the market is not 100% efficient and there is money to be made that beats the indexes by a decent return. Year after year, these are found in the small cap, less discussed stocks. On the other hand, I am reading "A Random Walk Down Wallstreet," which discusses investing behavior and how people through the centuries have been burnt by "castles in the sky." This book recommends value investing the Warren Buffet way in ETF's, etc. Warren Buffet said in his 2005 letter (paraphrased), "Investors have had a string of good returns but have learned any number multiplied by zero equals zero." Basically, I am just looking for some conversation on which school of thought you believe in and why. Thanks in advance and I apologize for any spelling/grammar errors. Ed, what would I do without you.
How do you value a stock? Why do you value in a particular company? What do you ask yourself before investing in a particular company? How do you value it?
How do you determine the value of a company for buyout purposes? I am starting a small company and intend to fund the startup with venture capital. I am prepared to offer around 40% ownership to the investing venture capital firm. We plan to buy back the 40% after 3 years. At that time, what factors are used to determine the value of their 40% of the company? Is there a formula to estimate the value? Am I at the mercy of the investors? What type of returns do venture capital firms expect?
how do i find the intrinsic value of a stock? ie. AMD? in the value investing philosophy, intrinsic value is greatly stressed, at the same time very difficult to find the exact value. take AMD. im going through the balance sheet. current asset - debts. and im lost. where do i go from here?
Which country has the cheapest (most value for dollar invested) army? Say you have a total budget of $10 million. Which country can give you the best value army (trained personnel -- do not count equipment) for that $10 million? (Pretend your opponent also has $10 million and is going to try to overtake your army) Let's also say that you only get $5 million for equipment -- so you can't spend too much on anything fancy.
Is it better to be a value investor or a growth investor? Hello everyone. I'm just starting investing in stocks and wanted to see if anyone could give me some advice. There is just so much information out there that it's really hard to take in everything. I read in some books that the best way to invest is to find undervalued companies that have good fundamentals and will eventually come back to it's true value; meaning you will eventually make a big return once it gets back to it's true price(Value Investing). I also hear on the other hand that the best way to invest is to get in on companies with great upside like Google, Baidu, Blackstone, etc.(Growth investing). The problem with that is...I'm scared that once I do get in, that I will have got in too late. For all you investors out there that have been doing it for awhile, what do you suggest? I know Warren Buffett and Phil Town are all about the Value Investing so I can't go wrong with that philosophy. However, I know that there are others that are big on upside. Help!!! Thanks
Value Investing For DUMMIES? I'm 14 and i'm reading this book to get ahead because I plan to attend a top ranked business school. I am almost finished with the book and I have collected a lot of information. What is another book to branch off of that is not too complicated, but more strategic and advanced? This book was excellent and made more complicated concepts easy to understand. Now that I have the basic understanding it's time to upgrade.
What is the best way to cancel a cash value life insurance policy.? I want to keep the cash value invested, and would like to reduce the amount of penalty's that would be levied against it. I have done numerous studing on the topic and have realized that this was a mistake and i got taken. I've been funding it for a little over a year and have about a thousand dollars in the cash value. The surrender period is ten years. I've heard it is a good idea to role it over in a 1035 exchange into a variable annuity with the same company to reduce the fee's. Help????
Regarding investing: goes shorting a short that is decreasing in value make the thing increase in value? A question on "financial investment spreads": I am interested in purchasing the mutual fund RYSJX Rydex Dynamic Strengthening Dollar C. Can I go one step further, can I create a "spread" as follows to increase my reward if the Dollar does strengthen: spread Long (RYSJX) and Short (RYWJX) ---- Long Rydex Dynamic Strengthening Dollar C RYSJX and Short Rydex Dynamic Weakening Dollar RYWJX. The question is: does shorting a short that is decreasing in value make the thing increase in value; in other words does it work, like multiplying a negative by a negative to get a positive?
What does American soceity value more, education or entertainment? What does American soceity value more, education or entertainment? What do Americans value the most? Is more money spent on education to teach to the poor, to help those who can't read, etc. Or is more money invested in entertainment in America, such as football stadiums, pro-athlete celebrities (ex. Tiger Woods, David Beckham, etc.), or entertainers (ex. Britney Spears, Usher, Halle Berry, Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake, etc.). Which of the two does American society value and invest in the most?
Currently, I am investing 100% of my 401k in MetLife Stable Value fund,? I stopped putting money into Vanguard index fund when it got down to half of what it was when I started my 401k. But I don't know really anything about stable value, but I think it's not supposed to ever lose money. Can that be right? And, I've not seen any gains, either. How can I know if I'm making (or losing) money here? I didn't move any money that was already invested. I only changed future elections.
Does investing in stocks have a positive or negative effect on the economy? Supposedly, investing large amounts of money in post-IPO stocks simply locks that money away, and pulls it out of circulation. Is that true, and what effect does this have on the economy as a whole? (Is a lot of people with a lot of wealth sitting on their money, with it invested in stocks and only growing value for said people, a good thing or a bad thing?)
What does the tax assessed value have to do with the actual value of a property? I am looking to invest in real estate. This would be my first ever purchase of a property for such reason. I have been told to always look at the assessed value of a property before buying to see if the property is priced well or not. How does this value compare to the actual value of a property? As I've been doing research, I've noticed the majority of the properties are priced way above their assessed value. Does that automatically mean they are overpriced? Or is it that the assessed value is a certain percentage of the actual value of a property? Anybody that would be willing to share their wisdom of real estate investing, please do!!!
What is the truth about cash value life insurance? I have read from many different sources that term insurance is the best way to go, and just invest in mutual funds. But, I personally know a few people who own cash value policies. They have something called "equity indexed" life insurance (not variable life insurance) and seem to be pretty happy with it. Does anyone know anything about or have any experience with this kind of insurance? I'm considering going with something like that because I was told it's basically term insurance with a savings component where you earn interest based on the upward movement of the S&P 500, but you're not actually investing in the market so there's supposed to be no downside risk. Anyone? Thanks.
How does compounding relate to investing in stocks? I am just beginning to learn about investing and am familiar with the concept of compounding. I hear experts talk about starting early so that compounding can work its magic. I can see how it works on say a savings account that pays monthly interest. But when the experts suggest investing in stocks because of the higher rate of return I'm not sure how compounding can apply since stocks don't pay interest they just increase (or decrease) in market value and only some pay regular dividends.
I have a whole life insurance and want to take the cash value, what is the best way to do it? After reading about buying term and investing the difference, I found out that I can save hundreds of dollars a month by buying a 30 year term policy and get more coverage. With the money I saved, it gives me options on what I can do. Besides investing it, I can also pay a little more into my debt payments. I have about $32k in the cash value, after surrender charges, its $28k. I want to get the most out of my money, but not sure what to do. I can't put it all in my Roth IRA. I don't want to save it in my bank account since I only get 0.75% interest on it.
Investing tips?? Hi, I am in my early twenties and started working after college for couple years already. I would like to accumulate wealth as early as possible and hopefully have an early retirement. After having saved enough money, and having had some surplus funds, I thought it would be financially wise to start investing this surplus fund for long-term growth. I have an investment horizon of more than 10 years, so I decide to invest in stocks for the highest possible long-term returns. I intend to take a value-investing approach towards my investments. Does anyone out there have any undervalued stock recommendations? Thanks

Better Concept of Dollar or Value Cost averaging? i was observing Dollar cost or value cost averaging for a long period of time. I invented a better way. Dollar cost averaging- Says Invest fixed amount every month/period, eventually leads buying more at lows, but less at highs. Value cost averaging- Says invest fixed amount every month/period, sell if increase value, dont invest if its increased equivalent for next month proportion., if it reduces dont stop buying- this will leads- buying more when its low, selling when its high I invested RYDEX-Venture-Velocity Fund-Concept(these 2 are exactly oppositely/inversly correlated 2times(twice) to qqqq Every month or period- RYDEX venture falls invest- next month if rydex venture increased value, then implement value cost averaging for velocity.. This concept no financial book suggested. But does any one agree with me? Back tested? any hidden propblems in this concept? i want some one to share my ideas and thoughts.
Is it basically safe to use a Stable Value fund in my 401(k) as a substitute for a money market fund? Ignore for a moment that this is a retirement account (401k). I want to be very conservative with my balance but do not want to withdraw. About 15 fund choices, including s&p 500 index fund and a basic bond fund. Also a Stable Value Fund. Am currently using Stable Value fund since we don't have a money market type fund. I know Stable Value is invested in GICs etc and not treasuries, and that share price of $1 is not guaranteed. But given the limited options of funds, if I'm looking to mimic a money market, is the Stable Value the best choice? Or should I be in a bond fund? Or is diversified between bond and stock index funds going to be the best way to maintain very stable balance? Thanks.
Current Market Value of Firm? Hey, I have to calculate the 'Current Market Value' of a firm, and i'm only given this data: Annual net free cash flows are $365000. Risk-free interest rate is 6.25%pa. Total book value of assets of $3.1m. Standard deviation of firms stock return is 27%. Cost of capital of 16% per year. Shareholders represent a total of at least 55% of the equity. Future Value of $1 invested in a similar firm with similar risk: $1.20 in good economy, $0.85 in bad economy. Other company take over bid offer: $11m My problem is, i thought Current Market Value = (Share Price * Number of Shares) + Debt. I think Debt is the book value of 3.1m, but i cant seem to find the price of the shares or how many there are to calculate the equity... Am i on the right track, or have i missed the point completly...? any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Richie

Value if $25K Invested over 10, 25, 50 years? Just curious what $10K, $25K, even $50K invested today in the markets would be worth in the future...assuming I don't add anything else. Or, what if I added $250-$500/month every year?
Republicans value? Democrats value? What do the political parties claim to value? If you value traditional family values and ______ vote Republican because they support constitutional ammendments on gay marriages and the definition of human life, faith-based welfare grants, student inititated prayer in school, ethical research regarding health care, death penalty and harsher punishments, and the destruction of all terrorism. If you value oppurtunity, fairness, and investing in people you should vote Democrat because they support a mother's right to choose regardless of financial ability, ethical embryonic stem cell research to reduce suffering, making allies rather than enemies, preventing terrorism by education and cutting off funds, no gay marriage ban. Changing tax system to discourage jobs going overseas, gain energy independence and cut debt in half. raising minimum wage, cutting taxes for middle class not wealthy and expanding health care cost and coverage to help bring everyone back on an even playing field Help find words to describe their values by what they support according to the 2004 platforms. Thanks- I have to make an argument kind of set up in this way and cast it. Doc if you read my question than you should know that clearly I AM WELL AWARE OF WHAT BOTH OF THE POLITICAL PARTY PLATFORMS SAY. I can add my impartial summaries of both if you would like. gee, I wish if people were going to give people thumbs down they would answer...I just need help with wording...please,please,please answer. I thought I did a good job not showing my beliefs, oh well anyway thanks for the advice #2 I just was writing what they said-I'm not sure the Republicans really talked about fuel in theirs and the dems say to reduce suffering or something to that degree, I actually just added that in for this question. Thank you for not just trashing a party or another- To anybody who wants to- that is not the kind of thing that will change anyone's mind I suppose unless they are completely uneducated about the candidates and are just voting in this election because they want to make history-idiots- anyway let me rephrase this WHAT WORDS SUM UP THE BELIEFS I HAVE PRESENTED FOR EACH OF THE POLITICAL PARTY PLATFORMS. such as I wrote 'family values' on the republicans to sum up the gay marriage ban, abortion ban, prayer in school etc..
what are some good small-cap value stocks to invest in over the next few months? Why are you just assuming that I'll take any answer I get and run over to my Fidelity account and invest right away? I've already been trading in the stock market for over 2 years and have probably made a larger return on my interest than you have in your savings account. Maybe a small-cap value stock that'll appreciate in the next few months is impossible for you, but don't assume that because you can't find success others can't find it.
