Short Term Investing - What is best route to take? I am looking to invest at 90 day or less intervals into something that is liquid and has a consistent rate of return. The reason I want to do this is I get paid commissions and only pay the taxman once a quarter. So, I want to make short term, 90 day investments that I can skim a little off the top and then send in the rest to the IRS. Any ideas would be great!
What types of analysis can I learn/use for short-term investing? Fibonacci? I'm not even sure if Fibonacci is valid for short term. By short term, I mean anywhere from day trade to a couple weeks. TJ clarified my question: What I'm talking about is called "swing trading". The question is about analysis, not about whether someone should or shouldn't swing trade.

Short-term Investing? I just came up on about $3000 and am looking to invest it into something. I am very naive when it comes to anything of this nature, so I just wanted to get some suggestions as to where I should put this money. I am looking for the highest yielding, short-term (six months, at most) investment. I do understand that I am not going to be able to make a ton of money, but I would like something better than a traditional savings account.

short term investing question? Please let me know if this sounds far fetched and if it will not work. just a little background... I have owned gamin stock (grmn) since january. bought it at 49 and it is over 105 today. good profit so far. what i have noticed about it though is that it seems to jump up and down by a few percentage points on many days. down 2 percent one day up 3 percent the next. it has been like this for the 7 months or so that i owned the stock. I am thinking of using a different account to buy and sell garmin short to make a profit. heres how i will do it. i will use limit orders and put the limit order buy on like 2 dollars below the current price once i get it i will put a limit sell order on to sell at like 2 dollars over the current price that would be like a 2-3% gain which could be done in one day. sometimes it might take more time. I will be using bank of america to make these trades and I get the commission free trades. i pay 0$ for trades. am i missing something?? will this work? a curious muse: I plan to sell 100 percent of the shares that I bought for a profit. then do it all over again. buy shares then sell all of them for a profit again. and again, and again. I already have 100 shares that Im holding longer term with fidelity. this is strictly to lock in my gains over and over again. Im just using grmn to do this because i am comfortable with this stock and have been watching it for 7 months now and know a little about how it behaves on a daily basis. one more question about this also.... when im using the limit orders, will my broker, Bank of america securities, always pick up my order on the way by the limit i set. what i mean is will it place the order the second the actual price hits my target or will it sometimes miss and not place the order. how reliable are these brokers at doing that? if i see that during the day the session low price is below my limit order price does that mean that the order definately should have gone through or do they sometimes miss it? like if it went below my limit price for one second and then shot back up over my price, will the order go through?
Short term investing, bonds, Cds......please read on? My savings bonds are worth about $500. They have 3 years left to mature. In about 2 and a half years I intend to buy a house. In order to accumulate as much money as I can for a down payment, would it be beneficial for me to cash in the bonds and combined with some additional cash (possibly a total of $1000), put the money into CDs? Also, I will regularly have money to add.

High-return, short-term investing? For a class I have been assigned to virtually invest 20,000 for an imagined period of 1 year, in two different types of investments. They can be any type of investment. But the professor says the return should be higher than the rate of inflation, which he estimates at 4%. What investments should I be looking at? Money markets, or maybe individual stocks? I need to justify why I choose these investments. He also said diversification is important. Thanks for any help.
high return, short term investing? For a class I have been assigned to virtually invest $20,000 for a period of 1 year, split between two different types of investments. They can be any type - stocks, cds, money markets, bonds etc. But the professor says the return should be higher than the rate of inflation, which he estimates at 4%. Obviously the higher the better. What investments should I be looking at? I need to justify why I choose these investments. He also said diversification is important also. Finally, where would I find the information on the actual securities, where I can track how they're doing? Thanks for any help.
Is investing in a long-term IRA (higher percent) a better investment than a short term one? Does it make sense to get 2.8% for a 3 year IRA and risk losing much of the advantage due to inflation and or better rates in the near future? Or do shorter term plans make more sense in this economy?
Is short selling less risky activity than long term investing? I mean, I've got a bunch of shares and all of them have lost so much money from the crisis. I'm thinking, they're fluctuating so much, why don't I just start short selling them. I mean, eventually they will shoot back up, but right now, it seems much more likely that the economy will keep them down for some time.

Which is better: Short-term Trading or Long-term Investing? I have just started reading about investing a few days ago so I still have a long way to go. Currently, I'm reading Ben Graham's "Intelligent Investor" and from what I've read so far, he's adverse to speculative trading/day trading and he advocates long-term investing and looking at the value of a company rather than merely looking how its price fluctuates in the market. He cites many examples of speculative traders who incurred big losses in the long-run. But then, I've been following this forum where a professional day trader talks about long-term investment being merely a propaganda. He is saying, to the best of my understanding, that we should take advantage of the volatility of the market and never ever buy-and-hold. And he seems to be very knowledgeable in this area and he's making big profits out of it. I've also read a couple of articles saying that buy-and-hold is a myth and we should always do something about the market trends. But these are the very things that Graham warned the non-professional investor about. Now, I don't know what to believe. I don't know if I will have the answers after finishing Graham's book. :[

Should I Rollover to Traditional or Roth IRA, invest short term then cash out? I have 401k from my former employer. I'm gonna need the money soon so I will be cashing it out sometime in the next couple months. It's only the couple thousand. Where shoud I invest 150K for short term? I just received some money and was wondering where I should invest 150k short term to get the highest yield. I would like to be able to take out $30k per year until it is zero and have low to moderate risk. Thanks all for your help. Ok here is some more information. The money is inheritance. I am a medical student and have some pretty expensive bills. My expense is approximately 65,000 altogether per year (have 2.5 years left, then residency, where I'll probably make 30k a year). And my loans are about 6-7% interest. So basically, I want to pay off my loans a little later and not right now, and earn some interest to counter them in the meantime. If I was to actually invest the money longterm, I don't know if they would outperform the loans, and I'm unsure of the quality of living I'd have trying to pay them off, so I don't want to invest long term. Does that help?

Where to invest 10k for short term? I am looking for a place to invest 10k for the short term. I need an investment that might earn about 6 to 7% annually, but it doesn't need to be fixed income. Something with low risk such as A Money Market Fund or Bond Fund. I have this money sitting in my ING account and it's earning about 4.5% right now, but I'd like to do a little bit more with it. This is our so called "emergency fund" so I don't want to take alot of risk with it. I already have seperate investment and retirement accounts that I am taking a bit longer term approach with.
I have 100k to invest short term.? I have 100k to invest short term. One option is to buy stock, results may vary. Another option is to get a 1 year CD at current rates which are around 4.5 - 4.8%. The last option is to pay off a large chunck of my mortgage princple, for which my rate is 4.85%. I have an interest only loan so this would substantially reduce my monthly payments and would give me a smaller principle when i need to refinance in 2 years. Thoughts?
