What is the best way to learn Dividend investing strategies? My goal is to stop working in 3 more years at age 40. I will receive about a $32K/year pension at that time and I want to put my money to work earning interest/dividends to supplement my pension. I should have about $250K to use toward a dividend strategy, and if I can make 10% year average I can add $25K to my $32K pension. I want preservation of capital but of course I'll need enough capital appreciation to stay ahead of inflation. Appreciate any advice on where to look to persue this plan...books, websites, etc. Thanks!

Re-invested dividend shares.... where do they come from? Hi, Currently I have x shares in a company. I'm set up on a 'dividend' scheme whereby at the end of each year my dividend payment is used to re-invest and purchase more shares. So after one year I have x+y shares, but where do the 'y' shares come from? I was under the understanding that the authorised share capital of a company was finite, and that the only way to authorise more shares was to submit to Companies House. So: does this mean that for each 'new' (or reinvesting) shareholderthe company is having to re-authorise it's share capital amount? Or is there a 'reserved' pool or something similar for "new" shares? Thanks!

What is the difference between the dividend rates and APY for a certificate of deposit? I'm having trouble understanding CD rates on my bank's webpage. For a 1 year CD, they have the following rates listed: Dividend rate: 5.40% Monthly APY: 5.54% Quarterly APY: 5.51% What is the difference between these rates? To make the math easy, say I had $100 invested in this CD. How much interest would I earn on that $100 in 1 month, in 3 months, and in 1 year? And, what formulas did you use to come up with these numbers? Both of the answers are pretty good -- but neither addressed the hypothetical situation above. If I invested $100 (to keep the math easy) at these rates, would I have $105.40 in a year if i did not reinvest? Or would I be paid $5.40 every month?

How does compounding relate to investing in stocks? I am just beginning to learn about investing and am familiar with the concept of compounding. I hear experts talk about starting early so that compounding can work its magic. I can see how it works on say a savings account that pays monthly interest. But when the experts suggest investing in stocks because of the higher rate of return I'm not sure how compounding can apply since stocks don't pay interest they just increase (or decrease) in market value and only some pay regular dividends.
