my annuity at work paid 10.65% interest. Is it invested wisely? Vanguard high yield junk bonds only paid 8.12

  1. With annuities, you need to look closely at what you are paying in fees. The "before fees" return may be deceptive.
  2. That is a good return on investment but how much is it costing you to get it?
  3. Annuities are generally a bad idea if you are under 65. They sell because they have what amounts to a "stop loss" feature but typically make ENORMOUS commisions for the seller, which should tell you all you need to know! (The broader stock market regularly returns 10-12%, or 15-18% if you work it right)

  5. I don't think the other response caught the "at work" portion of your post. I'm guessing your plan is a 403B or TSA, different than the typical variable annuity they are referencing. To address your question, though, it is impossible to tell. You told us the result, which was 10.65. But that tells us nothing about how it is invested, which is what you are asking about. And I wouldn't use Vanguard's high yield junk bond as your parameter, or benchmark. Again, to know if it is invested wisely we'd need to know what your goals are, how long you are intending to invest, and what investments you own. You can send an email to moneyguy976@gmail.com with that info, and I'll tell you what I think, but I don't check this site regularly. All the Best, Moneyguy
