What are the best companies to invest in for short term? Long term?

Im new to investing and just doing some research before I get started in the market. I plan to wait until just before spring to enter the market and need some pointers from some experienced investers. I only want to invest in the most promising investments. Anyone have any companies for me to watch? Also should I invest in biofuel now or wait and who is the leader in the industry?

  1. You'll be entering themarket at the end of a very long bull cycle. Odds are that the economy will begin to contract and stocks will go down. I suggest you learn about shorting stocks or buying put options.
  2. Short term - none, too volatile for a newcomer. Long term - wait for the financials to go down further to an unimaginable level, then buy.
  3. An easy way to get 12-18% compounded returns for a looooong time is to just buy BRK.b tomorrow and then look at it about every 5 yrs. Its the best collection of businesses on the planet and unless you have the knowledge/time to pick individual issues and monitor them all the time you'll probably be disappointed. PS-you get Warren Buffet runnning the whole show for about $175k per year plus benefits. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.
  4. none, panic selling in a free fall market
