beginner to investing.. help?

ok, so I'm 18 years old and my parents broker (I think that's how you spell it) told my parents that I should start thinking about investing now, he told me to do some research and let him know what I thought. The only problem is I have NO IDEA where to start... any suggestions?

  1. I would suggest big banks like citigroup and bank of america. There to big for the government to let them go, but the pros say that you should spend an hour a week investing and for many, including me that isnt possible. Software like stock assault are getting popular they do all the trades for you. its at the site below might be worth checking out.
  2. Don't listen to anybody posting a response here; would be a good starting point. Get this book http://www.wealthybarber.com/ and bookmark and read this web site http://www.daveramsey.com/
  3. The way to start is to learn. Read "Investing for Dummies" by Eric Tyson. Then head to the library and read magazines like "Money," "Smart Money" and "Kiplinger's Personal Finance." Check out the stocks and funds they like and think about why they like them -- what makes them good investments. What products do you use most often, use up quickly and need to buy more? Soaps, fuel, food ??
  4. Well when it comes to researching it, I suggest looking at charts. One website that not only shows charts, but also current prices is: www.investopedia.com tip: invest in #1 companys that have been around for a while, whose products you use, and also, products you trust. example: Apple Inc, Ipod or Iphone, Mac book, i think you get the idea.
  5. i started investing at 18 as well, what i did was i took a couple of months to read up on the subject, i went with value investing, which is pretty much a fancy word for long term, i read up on the best value investors Warren Buffet and Benjamin Graham, a couple of books that really helped me out where The Warren Buffet way, the Tao of Warren Buffet, The little book of value investing, and The intelligent investor. Some good stocks out there are altria, MO, which makes Marlboro cigarettes, GE at these prices looks a good long term investment, and some of the bank stocks like Citi and Bank Of America.
