Should was or were be used in this sentence? "If I were/was rich, I would invest more money in stocks."

I absolutely agree that it should be "were." However, many people, use "was." Also, spell check doesn't highlight it as a mistake. I suppose interchanging "was" and "were" could become as acceptable as interchanging will and shall.
