does the type of currency matter when investing in an american based mutual fund?

I'm an American living and working in Thailand, and earning baht. In regards to currency, I would like to know what I have to do (exchange currency etc) to invest in a mutual fund like those offered by Vanguard. Cheers.

  1. payment is required in US dollars. so, you'll need a USD account somewhere in order to pay, or an account in a major bank that will exchange the currency of the account into US dollars. note that SEC regulations require settlement within three business days, which an ordinary account in a Thai bank may not make possible. of course, you could email Vanguard directly and ask them.
  2. I believe you can open your account on-line...but then mail your check to Vanguard...it should be a simple matter to go to the bank and have them write a check or money order in dollars... made out to Vanguard. Once your money is in the account... your trades and settlements will be made from that account. That's where " three days" comes in....
