investing in stocks?

whats the basic idea and point of investing in stocks. what are it benifits if i get into it.. what are the dowsides? i need help please. books?

  1. You are a part owner of the company in question. Benefits - you can do well with dividends and/or capital appreciation. Downside - you can lose your entire investment (Enron) or most of your investment (Bear Stearns). Don't buy on margin - too risky. Research stocks of companies you know (things you buy or use).
